Maths
At Ludlow Junior School, the maths curriculum has been designed to inspire children to become passionate mathematicians who have opportunities to develop basic skills, mathematical thinking, problem solving and logical analysis. Through maths mastery teaching approaches, we aim to develop curious mathematicians who are able to question, reason and problem solve. With a focus on a solid, basic understanding of mathematical concepts, all children are able to thrive in an environment that encourages questioning and deep thinking.
Our aim is to provide children with coherently planned and sequenced opportunities in order to consolidate, extend and master skills in a range of contexts. In addition, children will be able to retain key concepts and pupils will be able to develop links between ideas thus developing their schemata. Through clear and well planned maths lessons, children are encouraged to build up a solid foundation in maths fluency so that pupils develop automaticity before being exposed to wide and varied reasoning and problem solving which challenges their mathematical knowledge.
We use the national curriculum as our framework and supplement this with the small step progression taken from the ‘White Rose’ scheme whilst also considering the needs of the children at our school. This follows a concrete, pictorial, abstract (CPA) way of teaching and learning.
At Ludlow, teachers identify opportunities to assess starting points for pupils and content is then be adapted to meet individual needs. Learning pathways offer high degrees of personalisation through these aspects of learning. Through regular and accurate ongoing assessment, teachers plan and deliver ambitious and challenging next steps for pupils to develop their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding.
